Free Loom Knit Hat Pattern

Fall is here and so are warm winter loom knits. Hats make easy & quick gift ideas for the holiday season. I designed this hat with a modern look using lots of texture and a colorblock color scheme. Many loom knitters comment on how neat my edges look. This hat will show you one of my little secrets, working a hat from the top down. The bind off is always neater than the cast on (particularly on those large gauge looms). Just be careful not to pull those stitches too tight or your hat will lose stretch.

Please enjoy this free pattern and let me know what you think of it by commenting below. Don't forget to Pin it for later. I love a warm and cozy hat, especially one as cute as this!

Pattern Notes
  • The hat is worked in the round from the top down.
  •  Before starting, take your color A yarn around the loom 1 and 1/2 times and cut. You will use this yarn to gather your hat.

Pattern

Foundation rnd:  Chain CO 40 pegs with 1 strand color A; join to work in the round.  Using a yarn/tapestry needle threaded with the piece of yarn you cut earlier and take it through all stitches on the pegs, top to bottom and leave hanging. You will use this to gather the hat later.

Begin Top of Hat…

Rnd 1:  Ewk
Rnds 2:  U-knit
Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until total work measures “4/10.2 cm.
Cut color A. Change to color B.

  Begin Ribbing…

Rnd 1:  Ewk
Rnd 2: *ewk1, p1, rep from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 3:  *U-knit1, p1, rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep rounds 2 and 3 until total work measures “8- 1/2/21.6 cm.
Bind off:  Chain bind off all stitches.

Finish:  Weave in all ends. Blocking is not necessary.

“On large gauge looms You will get a nicer edge If you work them from the top down. The bind-off is always neater than the cast-on but does have less stretch.”

Enjoy the fall season!

So if I’m reading this pattern correctly, when you get to the ribbing wouldn’t you repeat rounds 2 and 3 to get the ribbing instead of rounds 1 & 2. Or am I misunderstanding the pattern?

Yes! You are correct MrsCrochetPants. Thank you for finding the typo for me and for visiting my blog. Have a great day!

You mention the chain cast off. What is that? I know the chain cast on.

I am a newbie to this method. Where would I find the video to properly gather the top of hat since we are working from top to bottom on the loom? I was looking at the list of videos and definitions and I wasn't sure which to watch.
